Taylor tied the course record with an 11-under 60 in the first round and shot 70 in the second. That moved much of the second round into Saturday and there was another delay — this one for just 21 minutes — in the morning because of unplayable conditions. Scottie Scheffler — eyeing his third straight Phoenix Open win — shot 66 and is four shots back at 8 under. Theegala shot up the leaderboard on the back nine, with birdies on Nos. The 26-year-old — a three-time All-American at Pepperdine — earned his first PGA Tour win last year at the Fortinet Championship.

By Alvise ArmelliniVATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Sunday will elevate to sainthood the first female saint from his native Argentina, an event that will be attended at the Vatican by his former strong critic, Argentine President Javier Milei. Milei, a maverick right-wing libertarian, in the past called Francis an "imbecile", a "son-of-a-bitch preaching communism" and the devil's man on earth - but has softened his tone since taking office in December. Francis has said he hopes to be able make his first trip back to his homeland since being pope in 2013 in the second half of this year. Francis, himself a Jesuit, described her on Friday in a meeting with pilgrims from Argentina as a "gift to the Argentine people and also to the entire Church," praising her dedication to the poor. Quoting from his past writings, the pope condemned the "radical individualism" that permeates today's society as a "virus", in words that may jar with Milei's radical free-market instincts.

DETROIT – Ford Motor started the year with a slight increase in sales, as a large jump in hybrid vehicles offset an 11% decline in all-electric cars and trucks. The Detroit automaker on Friday reported sales rose 4.3% last month from January 2023, led by a 43% jump in hybrid sales and 2.6% uptick in traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Despite the focus on hybrids, 90% of Ford's sales last month were traditional cars and trucks. Ford's stock has fallen about 1% in 2024.

By Fabian HamacherPINGTUNG, Taiwan (Reuters) - Taiwan's air force showed off its armed-to-the-teeth submarine hunters and early warning and control aircraft on Tuesday, demonstrating how it keeps watch on the skies and waters around the Chinese-claimed island. Taiwan's air force, dwarfed by China's but well-armed with mostly U.S. equipment, has been at the front lines of responding to these missions and regularly scrambles to shadow and warn away Chinese aircraft and ships. On a defence ministry-organised media visit to the Pingtung air base in southern Taiwan, the air force displayed its Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion anti-submarine aircraft and Northrop Grumman-built E-2K Hawkeye early warning and control aircraft. The air force also conducted flybys with one of their E-2K Hawkeye aircraft. Taiwan has reported Chinese warships and warplanes frequently passing through the Bashi Channel.

It has to do with “Hit Man,” a comedy Powell co-wrote with the director Richard Linklater that casts him as a hapless teacher who must pose as an assassin for hire. I first saw it at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it proved so crowd-pleasing that the audience broke into applause midway through the movie. A week later at the Toronto International Film Festival, the response was also through the roof. But for months, Powell had only heard about all that secondhand. Since the Screen Actors Guild strike was still going strong during the fall tests, Powell wasn’t able to attend a premiere of “Hit Man” until it played Monday night at the Sundance Film Festival.

It's no surprise that Warner Bros.' "Barbie" and Universal's "Oppenheimer" were among the 10 best-picture nominees announced Tuesday for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. The duo exploded into cinemas in July, generating big box-office bucks and enchanting critics and audiences alike. Helmed by academy darlings Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, respectively, the dichotomous films have been on Oscar prediction lists for months. Although Gerwig missed out on a best director nomination, both filmmakers received nods for their screenplays. But Greta Gerwig not being among the five best director nominees for this year’s Oscars is one of the biggest shocks in recent memory. Here are some other major “snubs” and “surprises” from Oscar nomination morning. Gerwig was previously nominated for best director for “Lady Bird,” and missing out for “Little Woman” was even a snub. “The Super Mario Bros.” movie, the second highest grossing film of the year was completely shut out from nominations including animation. ‘SALTBURN’ GOES DOWN THE DRAINListen, we didn’t really think that Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” would make a big splash nominations morning, but it had been trending that way based on its popularity on Prime Video over the holidays.

Ford announced Friday it's reducing production of its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, starting April 1, due to slowing demand for EVs. The automaker said the Lightning cuts are being made to achieve the "optimal balance of production, sales growth and profitability." But since Ford is cutting back EV production, the automaker's goal of scaling up its EV buildout could be delayed. In fact, the Maverick Hybrid sales exceeded the F-150 Hybrid last year with a 67% increase to more than 52,300 vehicles. Hybrids "make a ton of money," Jim Cramer said Monday after Ford reported a 75% year-over-year surge in hybrid sales in November to roughly 12,100 vehicles. "Ford should be spewing capital right now," because hybrid vehicles are more profitable than EVs, Jim added. He also suggested that given the new sales numbers Ford could be in better shape than its stock indicates. Perhaps keeping a lid on gains was the 6.5% drop reported in legacy internal combustion engine vehicle (ICE) sales to nearly 124,500 units. Maverick and F-150 trucks drove a 40% increase in hybrid sales in the third quarter, the three months ended in September.

CNN —The first production Tesla Cybertruck is expected to be delivered today – finally – four years after it was first unveiled. Stellantis’s Ram 1500 Rev electric truck will also go into production in late 2024. The Cybertruck is less than 19 feet long, according to Tesla, which is slightly shorter than other full-size trucks. Ample functional front space has been a big selling point for the Ford truck, in particular. That truck is claimed to provide up to 14,000 pounds of towing, the same figure Tesla originally claimed at the Cybertruck’s unveiling.

Maverick Capital wasn't immune to the private market turmoil that has tanked start-ups and crushed venture capital returns. Like many private investors, Maverick has marked down some of its investments internally as higher interest rates have put pressure on money-losing start-ups. Snapdocs, according to Maverick, should no longer be considered a unicorn, valuing the online mortgage processing company at $628 million. Maverick, which runs a $1.4 billion venture and growth fund, is bullish on a few of its companies, though — even raising their valuations despite the overall market turbulence. Senator Joe Manchin, a maverick who has often bucked party leadership in the past two years, said on Thursday that he will not seek re-election, hurting Democrats' chance of defending their thin Senate majority in the 2024 election. The move by the 76-year-old lawmaker will make it very difficult for Democrats to defend his West Virginia seat. "We like our odds in West Virginia," Senator Steve Daines, the head of Republican senators' campaign arm, said in a statement. David Bergstein, a spokesperson for the Senate Democrats' campaign arm, said the party was confident in its chances of strengthening its majority. Manchin has insisted that his only motivation is the coal-producing state of West Virginia and an eye on fiscal responsibility.

REUTERS/Kevin Wurm/File Photo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The current U.S. Congress is on track to be the most polarized ever, according to a running analysis at voteview.com, a tool widely used by political scientists that sorts lawmakers based on how their voting records overlap with their peers. The complicated math behind the analysis transforms a lawmaker's entire voting record into one number, with negative numbers for liberals and positive readings for conservatives. The most liberal have the least in common with the most conservative, while moderates from each party have more overlap and are given scores in between. * Currently, the gap in the House sits at 0.90, beating the 0.89 gaps for lawmakers elected in 2016 and 2018. The current 0.88 gap in the U.S. Senate is also at a record high for that chamber.

The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place. In this way, the DVD service acted more as an overstuffed old-school video store.
